The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has affirmed this is true for people of all ages, including children, teenagers, and pregnant or breast-feeding women.
Well planned vegetarian diets can be healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in prevention and treatment of certain diseases, reports the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The results of an evidence based review indicated that vegetarians appear to have lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and lower rates of type 2 diabetes than non-vegetarians. Additional health benefits appear to be a lower body mass index (BMI) and overall cancer rate.
Protein, calcium, iron and Vitamin B12 are essential for health but may not be adequately consumed in a vegetarian diet.
